montagnarde1793: (wtfno)
Okay, so according to French wikipedia, it's a myth that Robespierre was the first to come up with the devise Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité in his speech on the National Guard on 5 December 1790....essentially because Mona Ozouf said so. And also because "liberty" is used sixty times, while "equality" is only used five and "fraternity" is only used once. Sorry to spoil your fun, revisionist wikipedians, but here is the relevant text in Robespierre's speech:

Elles porteront sur leur poitrine ces mots gravés : LE PEUPLE FRANÇAIS, et au-dessous : LIBERTÉ, ÉGALITÉ, FRATERNITÉ. Les mêmes mots seront inscrits sur leurs drapeaux, qui porteront les trois couleurs de la nation.

They
[the National Guards] will bear these engraved words on their chest: THE FRENCH PEOPLE, and below: LIBERTY, EQUALITY, FRATERNITY. The same words will be inscribed on their flags, which will bear the three colors of the nation.

Put that in your proverbial pipe and smoke it.
