Neither did I until I went back to it... But then, it's far from the only book I've ever changed my impressions of upon re-reading.
I have to say though, putting aside the more obvious examples here, what really gets me about this is that Mantel manages to make even Éléonore's concern for Maxime's safety into something abnormal and unsympathetic, as if she only wanted him to live so she could continue tourmenting him or something. -__-;
