Neoclassical Slash

I'm  presently vastly amused. I don't know if any of you are familiar with Le Sueur's drawing of Capet's execution, but if you're not, you're fortunately about to become familiar with it, because here it is:

I know it's not a very good scan, but do observe that there are indeed two men kissing in the foreground, which I have circled in red so that you might more easily be able to locate them.

I found a mention of the drawing in this book, which on page 74 provides some interesting elaboration on the subject and its portrayal.

That's unfortunately all for the present, but I hope you found it sufficiently enlightening. ;D

Hee, and what a present! =D

...I'm only excited for the, er, artistic value, though. Obviously. It has nothing at all to do with what you circled in red.

Didn't I post that one many months ago? Though there is far more than just *one* couple of men kissing: most of them are. Wait that I find it in my archives... (I have it in Thomas Crow's Emulation on David, Drouais and Girodet.)

Damn. I'm sorry, I completely forgot. >__<;;

Of course, citoyenne, no one would ever suspect otherwise. XD!

It's okay. XDD Your version seems cleary anyway. :P

But damn, that was long to find, and it was LONG AGO: http://maelicia.livejournal.com/199483.html

I had dubbed it the First Gay Pride Parade of History. With a decapitated king, that's a freaking good way to start. Um. Apparently, Lesueur has hallucinated plenty of Romans in the crowd (like the two who were there for the fall of the Girondins...?) -- not to say, almost only men. O.o;; The crack theory continues... or time travel is possible.

The version you have is bigger and easier to see. I shouldn't have bothered. >__>

Although, if it took you so long to find, it would have taken someone else even longer, so at least I've brought it to light again. :D?

That would be very amusing. I think it's just supposed to represent the sudden joy of liberty. (Obviously, it's the first thing free men would think to do, isn't it? XD)

&hearts Awesome. Yay, expressing liberty with homoerotic behavior. :D We aren't the only ones who draw questionably accurate art with boykissing in it.

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2008-04-28 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, what better way to express it, after all? ^__^ It's very nice to know actually, that in the case of the Revolution and Neoclassicism at the very least we don't actually have to invent anything on that score...

[identity profile] josiana.livejournal.com 2008-04-28 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Other than storming prisons, I can't think of any. >_> Hee. I know. XD

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2008-04-28 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
Well, but once you've done that, I mean... What better way to celebrate? XD They're so very useful, those Neoclassicists. :D

[identity profile] zigsternenstaub.livejournal.com 2008-04-28 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Very edifying;)

I thought so.
