Brought to you by my lack of sleep and Google Maps

There's apparently a town a bit to the South-East of Paris called "Saint-Just-Sauvage" that has a Rue Robespierre. Actually, there are a lot of towns around Paris with one. So why not Paris, eh? EH? None of the others have such interesting names though. I fail to understand why they would name their town Saint-Just-Sauvage," though... O.o Maybe there is a Saint-Just-Apprivoisé someplace.

It would seem for the most part, to continue on the theme, that there are several towns with Rues Robespierre in Nord-Pas-de-Calais (unsurprisingly), several towns around Paris also do, and then randomly one near Brest and another few near Lyon. But that's it.

And meanwhile, they still refuse to name any street in Paris after him. Most likely on the grounds that he was OMGTEHBLOODTHIRSTYDICTATOR!!!111!!1! Which I find truly ironic, since there is a Rue Bonaparte in Paris and Bonaparte actually *was* a bloodthirsty dictator. (Or if he didn't have a direct thirst for blood his thirst for personal glory definitely spilled a lot of it.) What's up with that? I don't understand why they don't just give him one of Haussman's; after all he doesn't deserve isn't using it.

And WTF, there's a Rue de Médecis?! And damn, La Fayette's got a huge boulevard! Are the people who decide the street names in Paris completely unaware that he tried to set himself up as military dictator twice and massacred innocent Parisian citizens?! Then again, since there's a Rue Bonaparte, I suppose they don't care.

....I give up. ;______;

Actually, I spoke too soon: there's an Avenue Robespierre in a town near Toulon called La Garde.

Saint-Just... sauvage? O.o;; Je peux en apprivoiser un?... ;^;... okay, I know; he'd scratch me in the face before I succeed. But still. It sounds SO cute. Like a pretty little Saint-Just with messy, dirty hair and an untied cravat and unkept clothes and he would sit in a corner and brood and would try to scratch me if I approached. AWWWWWWWWWWWWWW! I WANT ONE.
...I STFU now, promised.>.>

I think we all know what's the problem with the people who decide the street names in Paris. You shouldn't torture yourself so much. >.>

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2007-01-15 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently. XD Awww! That so needs to be drawn....I could do it too... ^___^ It's going to be so cute! It's okay; I figured you might have that sort of reaction.

They're the reincarnations of Thermidorians and royalists?

[identity profile] maelicia.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
OH YES. I WANT A DRAWING. A DRAWING OF A SAINT-JUST-SAUVAGE. With ripped clothes and messy hair and a brooding savage look!!! I WANT ONE. I want one I could cuddle forever... ;_; Yayyy! ^___^

Le mythe de l'homme sauvage -- à la Saint-Just? XD

...yes, that. >.>

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'll draw it, don't worry. If I still haven't in a week bug me about it.

XD Naturally. *cough*

I take it there was something else?

[identity profile] maelicia.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY! You can be sure of that.

No... it was that. I think. >.>

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll try to get it done before then. -__-;

It's the only plausible explanation. If they can give him a street in one town they can give him one in Paris; it's the République française, une et indivisible, isn't it? *sighs*

[identity profile] maelicia.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY! I WANT A CHIBI SAINT-JUST-SAUVAGE... or whatever you can draw which I can cuddle.

...are you sure it's still? I mean, it's the fifth République française... and they don't really like Jacobin "centralisation" anymore, you remember? The provinces, you know? They're sort of slightly unhappy with centralisation... which really just means you mustn't scream UNE ET INDIVISIBLE YAYZ too loud. I think. An idea, like that. Or an advice.

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if I can draw a chibi, but I'll draw some version of a Saint-Just-Sauvage.

Well, I went and looked it up, and the phrase "La France est une République indivisible [...]" is the beginning of the first article of the current constitution. Confusingly though, the first article continues to say that "Son organisation est décentralisée." Doesn't that sound like a bit of a contradiction? *confused* ....you could probably say the same thing about the phrase "Robespierre was the best thing since buttered bread" or somesuch, but that won't stop me from saying it. :P

[identity profile] maelicia.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY! *tries to cuddle a Saint-Just-Sauvage; fails* ;O;!

Uh. The problem of contradiction is common in our modern society... Oh, you can scream that. If you need a good reason to get beaten up, at least, that's a very good and worthy one. :D

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It can't be much harder than cuddling Montparnasse, can it?

France needs a new Constitution. *nods* And a 6th Republic to go with it :D

I probably won't get beaten up physically for that....unless I shout it in the Vendée or something. Then again, being emotionally beaten up is something entirely worse.

...I'm not surprised, somehow.

Marius!figment is flailing madly at you calling Napoleon a bloodthirsty dictator, though. >_>

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2007-01-15 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Neither am I, but that doesn't make it any less annoying. >__<

Hm, would he prefer if I said that Napoleon's thirst for personal glory got a lot of people killed. (Because that's probably more accurate in any case. -__-;)

[identity profile] josiana.livejournal.com 2007-01-16 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I know. :(

He says he would prefer if you said "OMG NAPOLEON IS TEH BESTEST THING EVAR!!!!11 &hearts &hearts &hearts" ^^;; But that's why he's not allowed to comment.

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2007-01-16 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, would it kill them to give up just a few streets? *sighs*

I see. Tell him he's out of his league; he should go back to staring at Cosette. XD

[identity profile] josiana.livejournal.com 2007-01-16 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
It might. Maybe they have an embarrasing speech impediment that makes it impossible for them to say his name.

I don't want to hurt his feelings. ;-; It's not his fault Victor Hugo wrote him like that.

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2007-01-16 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes. "I live on the Rue R--the Rue Rob--es--Robe--the Rue Robbedsperri Ahhhhh! *runs away crying*" You mean like that?

That is very true. Victor Hugo, why did you make Marius such a dolt???

[identity profile] josiana.livejournal.com 2007-01-16 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. :( Then they'd die of shame. It would be tragic. I guess we'll have to wait until he rises from his grave as a zombie to find out.

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2007-01-16 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Or comic, depending on perspective.

We could do that....right?

[identity profile] josiana.livejournal.com 2007-01-16 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
>__>;;

I suppose if we tried hard enough. Perhaps if I draw R/Gavroche S&M, or something. That's likely to at least get him to turn in his grave.

See, that's what always gets me, and not just about street names - Napoleon was a dictator, yet no one minds if you like him the way many mind if you like Maxime. He gets celebrated, he has the most ridiculously overblown tomb ever (my religion teacher, who's seen it, described it as "nothing short of insane" XD), he gets the token street names, blah blah blah. I'm mean, what? *Cling to Maxime*

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2007-01-15 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
That reminds me of a conversation I had with my mother: I made that same complaint to her, and she said it was because he had never claimed to be anything else. I then had to inform her that he did claim he was the continuation of the ideals of the Revolution, to which she had no answer. *sighs* I suppose I should be used to it by now, but... Maxime!

[identity profile] mujun-no-ageha.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
...actually I think there IS a Rue Robespierre in Paris (and a station du métro named after him too).

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robespierre

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2007-01-17 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
A station du métro, yes, but wikipedia is mistaken if it thinks there's a Rue Robespierre in Paris; various organizations have been petitioning for one for years without success.

[identity profile] mujun-no-ageha.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the English wikipedia says the same thing, and besides, I did find a Rue Robespierre in Paris once on Google Maps, and it was also on a random (satirical) picture I found on the internet...I don't know what to think anymore. (I'm sending you the pictures via e-mail, hope you don't mind).

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That's really quite bizarre, I must say...
(I don't mind at all--I should thank you, in fact.)
