Next time I'll post on something more substantial, I promise

Say, all of you remember this entry? Wow, that was a long time ago, relatively speaking. So what made me think of it? Well, I had finally gotten around to clearing all the junk out of my room recently, and I came across the magazine the original article was from. And when I was idly flipping through it, as I usually do before throwing something away, I came across the following ad.

I know you can't really see it too well (in case you can't, I'll note that it includes dead!Caesar-like figure, woman in blood-red dress, woman with half-eaten apple, and someone dressed in a modern take on late 18th century fashions, armed with a dagger--presumably the same person her stabbed dead!Caesar-like figure), but somebody please tell me I'm not the only one disturbed by the symbolism and context... You see, it seems fairly obvious to me that it has something to do with the Revolution, and I can think of a few more specific meanings but they're all rather distasteful. Then again, the whole magazine, as you might have surmised from the article is rather distasteful, so perhaps it's better to leave it there. >.> Still... thoughts?

Everyone in that picture looks incredibly drunk and half conscious. Also, they all look very similar, which is kind of boring. :(

You've summed up the look of every advertisement you will ever find in a fashion magazine admirably. XD But I can't help feeling that this one in particular has subliminal messages that I don't like...

Hm. It looks kind of like they were trying very badly to imply that the aristocrats were virtuous martyrs. O_O; Or maybe someone let all these models overdose on crack while they were on a break, and surreptitiously photographed the whole thing.

Both possibilities, admittedly, but it seemed almost Thermidorian in character to me... Maybe I'm just paranoid. >_>

I see how it could be perceived that way. :( I think you might be overestimating them, though.

Yes, see, that's what I thought too... But it is uncanny, isn't it?

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2008-02-29 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
And not in a good way either.

Why have you turned against us, subtext? Why? ;o;

[identity profile] estellacat.livejournal.com 2008-02-29 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
...I dare to hope it's just in fashion magazines that subtext has turned against us. >.>

I hope so. ;__; I don't know what I'd do without the sekrit gay subtext.

Don't worry, I'm sure that's not going anywhere. XD
