I just saw the phrase "règne de Robespierre" used in all seriousness in a serious work of history published this year, 2010.* The author wasn't even paraphrasing a primary source - let alone quoting one directly. No, she just apparently thinks this is the most appropriate term for the Republic, pre-Thermidor. And I was complaining about Luzzatto!

Oh god why. ( ノ♉︵♉ )ノ 彡 ┻━┻

There was literally no one else in France before Thermidor but Robespierre, I guess. All the people that were guillotined were really alternate aspects of his personality. And she's only just discovered this, and must enlighten us.

Surprise?

I wish I knew.

...That would be exceedingly disturbing.

In a sanity-destroying kind of way, yes.

Schama would be proud.
Does she mention "sanguinaire" somewhere? Because if she doesn't, her phrase is lacking the keyword.
God, will they ever stop?

Doubtless. Oddly, she doesn't use any terms like "sanguinaire"; she's utterly matter of fact. That's what makes it so bizarre.

...To think I actually bought this book and was planning on reading it at some point.

It's really bizarre. It sounds like a bad joke. Btw, who is she?
A few days ago I found something similar in another "serious" work, but I can't remember what it was. I'll have to look for it.

Someone who apparently both contributes to the AHRF and claims Mona Ozouf for a mentor. Is there considered to be no contradiction in this anymore?

I don't even know. I thought I must have been misreading it or taking it out of context somehow, but it's really there, making no sense.
