This movie is really going to suck. Muchly.

Apparently the People are reduced to the stereotypical "angry mob" so if the average viewer does not like barbie-pink!Antoinette, they'll have little choice in sympathies, because she and the rest of the Court will be the only human characters.

It's a lot easier for most people to sympathize with one person, even if she is the most annoying bimbo they have ever seen, than a "mob" with a good reason to be angry!

That said, from what I can tell, Liberation is treating this with irony, and seems to be pointing out that the subject matter is somewhat....irrelevant: big surprise there!
...at any rate, it's not a positive review, and I like the publication overall, so...

I sympathize. Still, I suppose you could go just to mock it. Rather like the Rocky Horror Picture Show, but with inaccurate costumes, bad accents, worse acting, and unattractive people.
Er...on second though, staying home and watching something else might be a better alternative.

Worse than the "trying to make a statement" cases of inaccuracy, are the ones where they don't seem to realize they're being historically inaccurate; Rameau is Baroque. Please people, I know you know your modern musique is incorrect, but did you know that this is supposed to take place in the 1770-80s???

It would be a good theory, except for the fact that the guillotine is infinitely marketable. No, Sofia Coppola's only doing this for her own vanity. Many people think up Mary Sues; she has the wealth and influence to be able to make a movie about hers. I just wish she wouldn't inflict it on the rest of us!

Punk!Marat is an amusing mental image. Oooh, that gives me an idea. It can be a tacky romantic comedy. He could fall in love with Simone Evrard based solely on her ability to clean his frilly dresses. Of course that would mess up the timeline a bit, but no one will know the difference.
